Artapestry 4

The Soft Machine , completed 2014,
110 cm x 190 cm x 7 cm

This tapestry collage reflects my interest in 'performance textiles' - utility cloth woven to
a specific size with considered edges - and
printed circuit boards. I have organised the
work as if it were transmitting signals from one
end to the other through a complex network of components. That these components are soft
and organic make them the most unlikely of
conductors and herein lies the ambiguity of
the work. Capacitors, transistors, resistors,
diodes etc., are translated into woven blocks,
visually related by colour and floated onto an
inert background.

The printed circuit board performs its task
without movement or any visible indication
that it is working. So too with The Soft
Machine which quietly performs its task
making instant connections between all of its
parts sending signals through thread and wool.
